LED Wall vs. Projection: Which Is Right for Your General Session?

One of the first big video decisions for any general session is whether to use an LED wall or projection screens. Both can look excellent. The right choice depends on the room, the lighting, the budget, and how the content will look on camera.

The Short Answer

Choose LED when the room has ambient light, the stage needs to feel premium, or the event is being streamed. Choose projection when the budget is tight, the room can be darkened, and the ceiling is high enough for large screens.

When an LED Wall Makes Sense

• Bright rooms with windows or house lights that can’t be fully dimmed

• Events that are livestreamed or recorded, since LED reads better on camera

• Stages where custom shapes, wide formats, or a seamless look matter to the brand

• Lower ceilings, because LED doesn’t need projector throw distance

When Projection Is the Better Fit

• Budget-conscious meetings where the room lighting can be controlled

• Breakout rooms and smaller sessions with standard 16:9 slides

• Venues with high ceilings and room behind or above the audience for projectors

What About Cost?

LED walls usually cost more than projection for the same screen size, mainly because of equipment rental and setup labor. Projection can get just as expensive when you need very bright projectors to fight ambient light. We often price both options so you can see the real difference for your room.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size LED wall do I need for a 500-person general session?

Most 500-person rooms work well with a center screen between 20 and 30 feet wide, depending on ceiling height and audience depth. A site visit confirms the right size.

Can we mix LED and projection?

Yes. A common setup is an LED wall center stage with projection screens on the sides for IMAG, or LED in the general session and projection in the breakouts.
